In this class, participants will make a reclaimed textile memento, using the initial of someone's first name. It may be their own initial or that of someone they wish to remember. Embroidery and lace are imbued with intimacy and profound personal meaning for both the maker and the receiver and so, by reclaiming discarded and disinherited needlework, your 'memento monogram' will also hold personal meaning for you and for the person it represents.
STEPS:
In this workshop you will reclaim needlework that you have collected, inherited or made, to create your own personal 'memento monogram'.
You will first sketch your monogram quickly on graph paper, then trace the shape onto tulle, stretched on an embroidery hoop using lace-pins;
Using sharp scissors, you will extract embroidered and lace motifs from the doilies, tablecloths, supper cloths, tray cloths etc. that you have brought with you. (Louise will also supply some needlework, but she requires you to also bring your own). This workshop encourages participants to be brave in cutting and reimagining treasured or found needlework - thereby giving it a new life. You will then pin your extracted motifs to the tulle stretched on an embroidery hoop. When finished, your 'memento monogram' can be hung directly on the wall, creating lovely shadows, or you may later go on to stitch it down to fabric, or have it framed.
