AMAM50 - Byzantine Colour

This design introduces student to a variety of beautiful canvaswork embroidery stitches including basic foundation stitches, an area of Bargello work, trellis effects and a selection of modern twisty stitches. My design is worked in stranded silks with a few metallic thread and bead highlights. However, this design will work equally well in stranded cottons.

Byzantine Colour is inspired by a layout of Byzantine designs in the wonderful book “The World of Ornament” published by Taschen. The symmetrical layout is ideal for filling with a variety of colours and stitches. I have used my piece as the front of a writing set, but you could also choose to frame it or use it to decorate a bag, box top, journal cover, etc.

The project can be worked on 24-count congress cloth or 18-count canvas and includes a range of canvaswork embroidery stitches as well as a small amount of bead embellishment.
