WF2 - Italian Smocking
Italian smocking is the third of the group of smocking styles which have been given a country's name.
Just as English Smocking is worked in patterns on a pleated grid, so too is Italian Smocking but with a difference. The threads may be visible by working on the top of pleats creating a design on the surface, or invisible when the movement of the folds creates the patterned decoration. Such combinations create wonderful patterns in the fabric manipulations. These patterns are quite different from the usual conventional patterns seen in English smocking.
This cushion displays an insert panel of Italian Smocking. The cushion has a piped edge and is feather stitched around the panel. In this project you will pleat your own fabric - a skill in itself, smock in the Italian style and learn techniques, including piping and feather stitch to finish off your project. Whilst working with one particular pattern others will be explored.
An extensive workbook will be provided, detailing all the techniques used in the class including piping and construction of the cushion. As with English or American Smocking, Italian smocking may be used in many of the same ways. If you prefer to use your piece in another manner this could be negotiated. A girl's dress, a small handbag, coat hanger are some options. It will be necessary to speak to the tutor for information regarding your choice.
