Reticella is an Italian Embroidered needle Lace technique, with origins going back to the cut work technique and style of the 15th Century. Threads are withdrawn from linen fabric leaving spaces to form a grid. The remaining threads, both horizontal and vertical are needle woven to bind them in place. The spaces left are filled with motifs creating different patterns and designs. The motifs are made from closed blanket stitch (often referred to as buttonhole stitch), wrapped bars embellished with picots, where the designs require.  This technique is a robust, hard wearing embellishment on fabric and can be used for household linen.
