HOLY STITCHES

Collectors are rarely as generous as Dr. Guy Churchman, whose significant collection of embroidered ecclesiastical vestments will be on display at The Embroiderers Guild, Victoria, for two weeks from 25 May, 2017.  HOLY STITCHES provides a rare opportunity to appreciate the rich materials, the artistic and skillful embroidering of religiously symbolic motifs used for centuries to embellish ecclesiastical garments and accoutrements.

But HOLY STITCHES is more than an exhibition of fine, antique needlework; it is a celebration of a long-standing partnership between Dr Churchman and members of the Guild’s Ceremonial Group.  Textiles are fragile, subject to storage abuse and deteriorate with wear and age; and so Dr. Churchman turned to The Embroiderers Guild, Victoria, to repair and preserve some of the pieces he has collected over the past 20 years.

Under the leadership of longtime Guild member Norma Bain, a team of embroiderers has worked on many items in the exhibition; restoring and preserving the integrity of the piece by stabilising the background fabric, re-working motifs that have worn away, or reattaching loose braids and edgings.  Dr. Churchman has become a frequent visitor to Embroidery House in Wattletree Road, clutching another box of pieces needing the expert attention of Norma and her team.

LECTURE:
Dr. Churchman and Norma Bain will be guest speakers at a pre-exhibition Lecture on Wednesday 17 May, 6.30pm for 7 pm at Embroidery House, 170 Wattletree Road, Malvern.  Entry fee $5.00
