MORE ABOUT EACH GROUP

Bead Group. Meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 10.00am. This is a friendly group of Guild members, all with an interest in beads and beading, Members are encouraged to bring along show and tell items. Sometimes there is a speaker, or slides, and the group often works on a project together. Past projects have included twisted wire with beads and a Christmas star. Any Guild member with an interest in beads and beading is encouraged to join.

Beyond Intermediate Group (weekend group). Meets on the third Saturday of the month. This group meets between 10.30am and 2.30pm. Members include a wide age range and most are members with working commitments. They sit and stitch in any technique and are a happy and friendly bunch that welcome any Guild member who has attended an Intermediate class, or who has their Intermediate Certificate.

Blackwork and Counted Thread Group (weekend group). Meets on the fourth Sunday of the month. This is a very enthusiastic group, which meets between 10.00am and 3pm. Members bring their own lunches and work on embroideries in counted thread or blackwork style. At least once a year they work on a group project. New members are very welcome.

Ceremonial Group (weekend group). Meets on the second Saturday of the month. The Ceremonial Group meets from 10.00am until 1.00pm. They are a varied group, all with an interest in restoring old or producing new ceremonial embroideries for various civil, military or religious groups. A lot of religious items are dealt with, as this is where ceremonial embroideries are most commonly found, but this is not a religious group. During group mornings they may discuss items of interest or work on personal or group projects such as commissions of new items or restorations of old embroideries. The group also has field days to different venues where they may undertake restorations. Projects in recent times have been the restoration of a Japanese screen embroidered in silk and metal thread, Jewish and Christian ceremonial items, and assisting the National Trust with its costume museum at Dromkeen. The work is not difficult to learn and the group is always very happy to have new members, inexperienced or experienced, join them.

Crewel Guidance Group. Meets on the second Friday of the month at 10.30am. This is a large group of friendly members who all have a love for crewel embroidery.  Members all work on items of crewel embroidery and occasionally on a group challenge. They meet from 10.30 am and have lunch together before finishing in the afternoon. The group would welcome new participants who also enjoy crewel work. See also the Jacobean Group.

Dulce Grice Group. Meets on the first Wednesday of the month. Named after its founder, this group meets between 10.00 and 12.00. Each month they have show and tell and then sit and sew. There are currently 12 members, a sociable group with diverse talents, who work in a range of techniques, from cross-stitch, to more complex techniques. They welcome new members.

Embroidery Tools Study Group. Meets on the third Friday of the month at 10.00am.

Ethel Oates Group. Meets on the third Tuesday of the month. This group is named after one of our founding members. The members meet from 10.30 a.m. until lunchtime. There is a core group of 6 who sit and sew in any technique, although there is a lot of cross-stitch. The group welcomes new members.

Fourth Monday Group. Meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 10.00am. Members sit and stitch in every technique in a happy and chatty atmosphere. New members are always welcome. As a bonus, drop in if you ever have a tatting query.

Friday Creative Group. Meets on the third Friday of the month between 10.00am and 12. Members show any work they have completed, and discuss any related problems or triumphs. There is usually a topic set for each meeting, led by one of the group, with samples and ideas. Group members tend to work with all kinds of new and creative things, from machine and hand embroidery, to making and working on silk paper, using Tyvek and other new techniques and products. They are a happy and enthusiastic bunch that welcomes new members.

Gift Shop Workshop. Meets on the second Wednesday of the month. This is a wonderful group of enthusiastic members who meet to work on items for the Gift Shop (open during our annual Members Exhibition). The materials and plans for the projects are supplied to the group who then work together to complete and donate many lovely items for the Gift Shop. New workers are always welcome. Meetings start at 10.30 a.m. and continue until the afternoon. See also the GLEW notes.

GLEW (Evening Gift Shop) (evening group). Meets on the first Thursday of the month at 6.30pm. This very friendly group of enthusiastic members meets to work on items for the Gift Shop that is open during our annual Members Exhibition. Great Escape Group (evening group). These meetings begin at 7.30 p.m. and finish at 10.00 p.m. Members are a mixed group of 30–40 something, professional women and stay-at-home mothers, with diverse interests from traditional cross-stitch to very contemporary work. The group is very social, friendly and informal, happy to indulge in brainstorming sessions to solve any stitching problems, and occasionally all work on a project together. Members are able to access the library. The group welcomes new participants.

Historical Study Group. Meets on the third Friday of the month at 1.30pm. This is a large and lively group of Guild members who meet in the Gallery from 1.30pm. Members don’t usually stitch, but spend their time discussing historical textiles and related items. Group members are encouraged to bring in their own historical objects for examination and discussion, items from the Guild's collection are looked at and occasionally, there is a speaker or slides are presented. There may be excursions once or twice a year. Members of this group are quite diverse, but all are keenly interested in the history of embroidery. A very friendly group who are happy to welcome new members.

Jacobean Group (weekend group). Meets on the second Sunday of the month at 10.30am. This weekend group was created to accommodate members unable to attend the weekday Crewel Group. They meet between 11am and mid-afternoon, working on their current Japanese embroidery project and assisting each other with any problems. Any member who has attended Japanese embroidery classes is encouraged to join them. Anyone who has an interest in Japanese embroidery is welcome to come along and have a look at what they are doing. If you are thinking of attending the Japanese embroidery class that is held annually at the Guild (over a period of 5 days), come along to this group to see what to expect.

Knit and Purl Group (weekend group). Meets on the second Sunday of the month at 11.00am. This group began as a response to renewed community enthusiasm about knitting. Members bring knitting to work on, share ideas, and there are occasional group projects. As well, some amazing embroideries have been produced using knitting as a base.

Lace Group. Meets on the first Friday of each month at 10.30am. Members of the group are all lace makers, but at these meetings they usually sit and talk about lace, rather than make lace. Guild members who are lace-makers, or who simply have an interest in lace, are welcome to join.

Linen Embroidery Group. This is an occasional group. It meets whenever a month has a fifth Thursday. This is a very large and enthusiastic group of passionate whiteworkers. Meetings begin at 10.00am and run until 3.00pm. There is usually a display board for completed projects, which is wonderful to see. Members work on their own projects but may be prompted by the group's leader to try something new. There is a core group of Drawn Thread, Hardanger and Pulled Thread Masterclass graduates available who are very helpful if you have any problems. See also the Weekend Whitework Group.

New Members Group (weekend group). Meets on the second Saturday of the month. This group is designed specifically for new members of the Embroiderers Guild. Meetings start at 10.30am and finish at 12.30pm. There is a short discussion about various aspects of the Guild, help with any questions that arise about the Guild and a presentation about different embroidery techniques to whet people’s appetite for embroidery. Those who come along can sit and work on their current stitching or just listen to the discussion. This is a great opportunity to meet other new members and get to know the Guild.

They show any completed or uncompleted work and discuss related problems and successes. It is not a digitised embroidery group per se, though some members use digitised embroidery within some works. An amazing amount of expertise is freely shared. There is usually a monthly challenge (not compulsory!) and sometimes a group project. See also the Thursday Machine Embroidery Group.

TAG (Textile Art @ the Guild)

Third Sunday Guidance Group (weekend group). Meets on the third Sunday of the month. This is a large group averaging 30 people who meet between 10am and 4pm. Members tend to come and go, not all staying for the full time. They sit and sew in any technique. Occasionally there will be a group project organised, and once a year there is a special effort to make some things for the Gift Shop. Members bring along their lunch and have a roster for afternoon teas. New members are very welcome to join them.

Thursday Machine Embroidery Group. Meets on the second Thursday of the month at 10.00am. Members do NOT bring their machines! They show any completed work and discuss related problems and successes. There is usually a monthly challenge (not compulsory!) and sometimes a group project. See also the Sunday Machine Embroidery Group.

Tuesday Guidance Group. Meets from 12.30–3.30pm on the second Tuesday of the month, the afternoon of the Tuesday General Meeting. Six-seven ladies attend regularly, and sit and sew in any technique. They would be very welcoming of new members who wish to join them.

U.F.O. Clinic. This is an occasional group that meets at 10.30am whenever a month has a fifth Monday. Come along with a U.F.O. (Unfinished Object) and get it started again. If you stopped because you ran into problems, you will find some advice and encouragement here. Or just use the session to get a bit more done. Arrive at any time - it runs till mid-afternoon.

Weekend Whitework (weekend group). This is an occasional group. It meets between 10.00am and 3.00pm whenever a month has a fifth Sunday. Bring your own lunch and any form of linen work to stitch.
