The Intermediate Certificate is designed for those with some competence in embroidery who wish to increase their knowledge of a chosen technique. Comprehensive tuition is given, giving students greater confidence in their ability to proceed without supervision. The courses are conducted at the Guild, and some are available by correspondence. Each course consists of six classes covering a specific technique. Each class session runs for four hours, including a half hour lunch break, and the classes are normally spaced over an eight-week period. To gain a certificate a student must successfully complete three courses over a five-year period. In the past Surface Stitchery has been a compulsory course, but that is no longer the case. While we still consider surface stitchery to be an important technique and a good forerunner to crewel embroidery, we recognise that many members prefer counted thread techniques or other techniques such as patchwork or heirloom sewing. Students who do not wish to qualify for a certificate may select any individual course offered. Course work exercises are usually in the form of samplers, which the student is required to present, with notes, for display on completion of the course. The final piece of work for each subject will be designed by the individual student. Homework will be required. It is essential that all finished projects, samplers and exercises are completed on time. Stitch books or other reference books may be required. The tutor will specify a date by which all course work, including the final piece, must be completed and ready for assessment. Correspondence courses. In the case of correspondence course, approximately two weeks is allowed in which to complete each lesson. Two lessons are forwarded initially, which allows the student to return lesson one for comment, while continuing with lesson two. Awarding the certificate. Following the satisfactory completion of three Intermediate courses within the prescribed five-year period, the student will display the work and the certificate will be awarded at a General Meeting at Embroidery House in Melbourne or at a Country Branch meeting. The display of the work does not need to be elaborate but it must be neat and well labelled.
