Embroidery and textiles from the First World War to the present.

Personal collections and stories show how embroidery and crafts were practised at home and on the front line,
contributing to the war effort with originality and creativity.

Creators include service men and women, refugees, prisoners of war, those on the home front, repatriated soldiers, and the embroidery industries of Northern Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Threads of connection: wartime embroidery
Presenter: Jane Peek. Curator, The Australian War Memorial, Canberra.

The Australian War Memorial's collection of wartime embroidery
tells the story of those Australians who went away to fight in wars,
and their loved ones who stayed behind.
Jane Peek will give an overview of the embroidery collection.
Items include those made officially for military use,
purchased by the soldier-as-tourist, and created for patriotic fundraising.

Textile conservation workshop
Presenter: Bronwyn Cosgrove, Textile Conservator, NGV

Flags, uniforms and mementos such as handkerchiefs and embroidered postcards, all serve as important reminders of
service, sacrifice and separation from loved ones.
Learn about the care and preservation of such textiles.
Examples will be provided, and guests are invited to bring along
their own collection items for assessment.
